Quality requirements for passive houses

Only buildings that meet the following criteria can be called passive houses:

  1. Heating demand per unit: the annual heating demand per unit living area (use area) shall not exceed 15 kWh, or the peak heating demand per unit area shall not exceed 10 W. In climate zones where active cooling is required, the unit cooling requirements are roughly the same as the heating requirements above, with the exception of a small additional cooling requirement for dehumidification.
  2. Primary energy demand: The total energy demand of all household equipment (heating, hot water and household electricity) shall not exceed 120 kWh per square meter of living area per year.
  3. Air tightness: It must be confirmed by field pressure tests (both positive and negative pressure tests) that the air change per hour of the building is less than 0.6 times at a pressure of 50 pascals (ACH50).
  4. Thermal comfort: Whether in winter or summer, the thermal comfort of all living areas must be satisfied, and the total number of hours above 25 °C in a year shall not exceed 10%.

Product design parameters of passive house:

In order to meet all the above requirements, 5 principles must be fulfilled through careful design: no thermal bridge design, high performance windows, fresh air system with heat recovery, high quality insulation and airtight structure.

  1. The following principles must be followed in the construction of passive houses:

1.1. Thermal insulation

All non-transparent parts of the building envelope must be very well insulated. For most cold temperate climate zones, this means that the heat transfer coefficient (U value) of the outer envelope does not exceed 0.15 W/(m2K), that is, the heat loss caused by the unit temperature difference per square meter of the outer surface does not exceed 0.15 W/(m2K). 1.2. Passive house windows

Window frames must be well insulated and fitted with low-e glass and filled with argon or krypton to avoid heat transfer. For most cool temperate climates this means a window with a U-value below 0.80

1.3. Heat recovery fresh air system

Efficient heat recovery fresh air system is the key to achieve high efficiency and energy saving while ensuring high indoor air quality. In a passive house, at least 75% of the heat in the exhaust air is recovered and transferred to the fresh air via a heat exchanger.

A comfort ventilation system with heat recovery contributes firstly to good air quality and secondly to energy savings. The fresh air system must not have noise pollution, and it should be kept clean and hygienic for a long time. At present, the upper limit of the highest decibel at 25dB(A) can be realized in the passive house.

1.4. Building air tightness

The unavoidable leakage air volume of the building obtained through the pressure test (positive pressure and negative pressure test), at 50 pascals, the total unit hour must be less than 0.6 times the total building volume.

1.5. No thermal bridge

All protrusions and components, corners, joints and penetrations must be designed and constructed with the utmost care, only in this way can thermal bridges be avoided. For some unavoidable thermal bridges, it must also be minimized as much as possible.

2. Other auxiliary design parameters

2.1. Efficient hot water preparation. Since heating consumes very little energy, hot water preparation becomes the main energy-hungry. Up to 60% of the energy demand for hot water production can be met with solar thermal collectors.

2.2. Energy-saving household appliances. Using energy-saving household appliances such as refrigerators, electric stoves, washing machines, etc. To significantly reduce the remaining power consumption.
